As a mechanical engineering intern at Directed Machines, I was assigned to devise a better mount for the antenna to improve reception and reliability. The main issue was that the antenna was attached to the top of the solar panel, which caused interference and made navigation challenging since it was not centered on the LCR (Land Care Robot).
Having a reliable connection is paramount as the LCR is autonomous, using a probabilistic topological model that is bootstrapped by the operator/user. I worked with 7 other teammates to come up with a solution, an antenna mount that attached to the main chassis and positioned the antenna 5 ft. off the ground and in the middle of the LCR. By placing an aluminum plate beneath the antenna, I was able to minimize interference, boosting robot GPS connection by 10%.
