As a design intern on the gigacastings team at Tesla, I was responsible for leading and working on cross-functional projects to improve vehicle structure and manufacturability of large body castings. Gathering feedback from other teams such as production, integration, and CAE, I made numerous design changes to the front underbody (FUB) that improved material flow, component packaging, and vehicle torsional stiffness. I also interfaced with suppliers and other Tesla teams from around the world to drive tooling and timeline specifications. 

6 months as a design intern taught me that engineering really is a team effort. Not only was I responsible for the design of the FUB, but I also needed to communicate changes and manage implementation strategies clearly with other stakeholder teams as well as global suppliers. The project that I’m most proud of from this internship would be developing a novel solution for bumper beam install issues due to casting thermal variation; this was a project that I owned from conceptual design to implementation.
